To serve as a primary informational and educational tool, American Memorial Park needed a print and e-book publication to increase multicultural and multigenerational understanding of the park and to promote preservation and interpretation of its resources. A new, graphically rich brochure could enable a direct visitor connection to over 24,000 people annually entering the park—a destination with substantially increasing numbers of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Russian vacationers and an aging island population. Providing these audiences with an easy-to-read publication, including essential information in their own languages, would allow more visitors to make their own emotional or intellectual connection with park resources.
In collaboration with NPS staff and subcontractors, we were responsible for all aspects of the project, including conceptual graphic design, writing, editing, cartography, illustration, and print-ready graphic production services. This entailed the research, selection/acquisition, and creation of all images, photos, and maps, plus coordinating all writing, editing, and translation work. Following completion of the print version, we developed accessible interactive PDF versions and an e-book version for use on Apple devices.
We used Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop) for layout/design and all production, and iBooks Author for the e-book version. Editorial reviews by NPS staff were conducted via PDF deliveries at various stages.
